Council Approves Energy Action Plan, Requests Feedback
The plan is part of the Sustainable Eden Prairie initiative, focusing on education and implementation of sustainable practices to protect the environment and natural resources in our community. The City is leading by example and providing a foundation for residents and businesses to carry out sustainable practices in four areas — energy, landscape, waste and water.
The Energy Action Plan resulted from participation in Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy, designed to support communities as they develop and implement strategic energy plans unique to their energy needs.
Over a five-month period, a team of Eden Prairie residents and community leaders identified focus areas, developed goals and strategies, and advised on implementation of the plan. With a goal of reducing communitywide greenhouse gas emissions, the team focused on three key segments of energy users — 1) residential properties, 2) large commercial and industrial buildings, and 3) public, nonprofit and service organizations. The communitywide goals are to reduce energy-related greenhouse gas emissions 30-percent below the 2015 baseline by 2025 and achieve an 80-percent reduction by 2050.
The City is asking residents for feedback about energy use and information sources with the Eden Prairie Home Energy Survey through Oct. 20. Your input will help the City effectively implement the Energy Action Plan.
“Community engagement is instrumental in successfully implementing our Energy Action Plan,” said Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens. “I ask residents, businesses, service organizations and our City to continue working together so we can carry out energy efficiency and renewable energy best practices in support of Sustainable Eden Prairie.”
