Save on Energy Costs, Schedule Home Energy Audit
Eden Prairie residents who are Xcel Energy or CenterPoint Energy customers can learn how to save money on energy bills from a Home Energy Squad® visit with a discounted rate in 2018.
As part of its Sustainable Eden Prairie initiative and recently adopted Energy Action Plan, the City of Eden Prairie is buying down the cost of Home Energy Squad visits to $50 for the first 200 single-family, townhome and condo homeowners who sign up. Visits normally cost $100 and are valued at more than $600.
The service is delivered by the Center for Energy and Environment (CEE), a nonprofit organization with nearly 40 years of experience helping homeowners save energy and money on their utility bills. During the typical 2.5-hour visit, a team of trusted energy consultants installs energy-saving materials, performs diagnostic tests and helps residents develop a customized plan for saving energy, which can help reduce utility bills and make homes more comfortable.
Materials installed during the visit for no additional cost may include a programmable thermostat, door and attic hatch weather stripping, high-efficiency water fixtures and LED light bulbs. Home Energy Squad consultants also conduct a blower door test, infrared camera inspection, combustion safety test on the home's heating system and water heater, and check attic and wall insulation levels.
At the end of the visit, homeowners receive a custom report with prioritized recommendations. If the home needs insulation or air-sealing upgrades, cost estimates are provided with an option to schedule the work with a contractor that day.
Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens scheduled a Home Energy Squad visit in early January and experienced the benefits of a detailed energy audit firsthand.
“In addition to the diagnostic tests and inspections, they replaced 44 bulbs with LEDs, replaced two shower heads with water saver heads, adjusted settings on the thermostat and water heater, and put an insulation blanket on the water heater,” said Mayor Tyra-Lukens. “This is the best deal ever! Even at the $100 rate, I highly recommend it for our residents.”
