FULL PROJECT SUMMARY
The City of Eden Prairie, in coordination with Hennepin County, MnDOT, and the City of Minnetonka, is improving Shady Oak Road (County Road 61) between and including the interchanges of Highway 62 and Highway 212. The project includes additional turn lanes, a median and trails along Shady Oak Road, and is being constructed in multiple phases described below.
Project Overview [PDF]
The proposed improvements to Shady Oak Road were identified in both the City of Eden Prairie’s and Hennepin County’s Capital Improvement Plans. The catalyst for implementing the project is the UnitedHealth Group (UHG) development on the east side of Shady Oak Road. The improvements to Shady Oak Road are based on a UHG traffic study [PDF] conducted as part of the development process. The completion of the northern phase of the Shady Oak Road improvements coincided with the completion of the initial phase of the UHG development. Construction on the north phase of the project began October 2012 and was substantially complete in November 2013.
NORTH SHADY OAK ROAD
The north phase of the project includes the full reconstruction of Shady Oak Road from approximately 800 feet north of Rowland Road, extending northerly through the Highway 62 interchange. The improvements provide additional capacity along Shady Oak Road and at the City West Parkway (Old Shady Oak Road), Highway 62 South Ramp (West 62nd Street) and Highway 62 North Ramp intersections. The project also includes new traffic signals at each of these intersections as well as new multi-use trails along both sides of Shady Oak Road.

In addition, the north phase of the project includes improvements to City West Parkway just east of Shady Oak Road, across from Old Shady Oak Road, resulting in a roundabout at the south intersection of the UHG access road, now named Optum Way.
SOUTH SHADY OAK ROAD
The south phase of the Shady Oak Road improvements includes the full reconstruction of Shady Oak Road from the intersection of Flying Cloud Drive to the limits of the north phase (800 feet north of Rowland Road). The improvements provide additional capacity along Shady Oak Road, including a new expanded bridge over Highway 212. As with the north project, multi-use trails will be provided along both sides of Shady Oak Road.
After the detailed project layout [PDF] was fully developed, a public hearing took place at the March 5, 2013, Eden Prairie City Council meeting, where the layout was approved. Click here to view the public hearing presentation [PDF].

WEST 62ND STREET
In order to accommodate the UHG development, future improvements are also planned along West 62nd Street. The West 62nd Street improvements include the full reconstruction of the roadway and a multi-use trail along the south side of the road. At this time, there is no specific schedule for the construction of the eastern segment of the West 62nd Street improvements, however, these improvements are planned to be constructed concurrent with the third phase of UHG development.
