FULL PROJECT SUMMARY
Shady Oak Road Project Layout
The City of Eden Prairie, in coordination with Hennepin County, MnDOT, and the City of Minnetonka, is improving Shady Oak Road (County Road 61) between and including the interchanges of Highway 62 and Highway 212. The project will add turn lanes, a median and trails along Shady Oak Road, and will be constructed in multiple phases which are described below.
Project Summary Graphic
The proposed improvements to Shady Oak Road have been identified in both the City of Eden Prairie’s and Hennepin County’s Capital Improvement Plans. The catalyst for implementing the project at this time is the proposed UnitedHealth Group (UHG) development on the east side of Shady Oak Road. The improvements to Shady Oak Road were based on a UHG traffic study [PDF] conducted as part of the development process. The completion of the northern phase of the Shady Oak Road improvements is being scheduled to coincide with the initial phase of the UHG development.
NORTH SHADY OAK ROAD
The north phase of the project includes the full reconstruction of Shady Oak Road from approximately 800 feet north of Rowland Road extending northerly through the Highway 62 interchange. The improvements will provide additional capacity along Shady Oak Road and at the City West Parkway (Old Shady Oak Road), Highway 62 South Ramp (West 62nd Street) and Highway 62 North Ramp intersections. The project will include new traffic signals at each of these intersections as well as new multi-use trails along both sides of Shady Oak Road.

This north phase of the project also includes improvements to City West Parkway just east of Shady Oak Road. These improvements include a roundabout at the south intersection of the UHG access road.

Construction on this phase of the project began October 2012 and will extend through 2013. Max Steininger, Inc. has been selected as the prime contractor and will be responsible for completing all construction work. Visit this page often for regular construction updates.
SOUTH SHADY OAK ROAD
The south phase of the Shady Oak Road improvements includes the full reconstruction of Shady Oak Road from the intersection of Flying Cloud Drive to the limits of the north phase (800 feet north of Rowland Road). The improvements will provide additional capacity along Shady Oak Road, including a new or expanded bridge over Highway 212. As with the north project, multi-use trails will be provided along both sides of Shady Oak Road.
Preliminary engineering work for this phase of the project is completed and a detailed project layout has been fully developed. A public hearing with the Eden Prairie City Council was held March 5, 2013 and the layout was approved. Click here to view the public hearing presentation [PDF].
Final design of the project is underway and will take approximately a year to complete. Construction on this segment is tentatively scheduled to begin in either 2014 or 2015.

WEST 62ND STREET
In order to accommodate the UHG development, future improvements are also planned along West 62nd Street. The West 62nd Street improvements include the full reconstruction of the roadway and a multi-use trail along the south side of the roadway. At this time, there is no specific schedule for the construction of the eastern segment of the West 62nd Street Improvements, however, this improvement is planned to be constructed concurrent with the third phase of UHG development.
