The Eden Prairie Police Department blog provides an opportunity for the public to learn more about the people who work there — their stories, their lives, their work in Eden Prairie and their thoughts on topics from driving to dogs.
Maximizing Our Space
In 1994, when the EPPD moved down the street from its old headquarters at 7900 Mitchell Road to its current location at 8080 Mitchell Road, Eden Prairie's population was 45,000 and the Police Department had 49 officers and 16 civilian staff. Today Eden Prairie has 63,000 residents, 68 officers and 28 civilian employees.
The addition of 31 employees over the past 25 years has put a strain on space in the department. With multiple employees sharing some offices and cubicles with little to no privacy, it has been challenging at times for staff to conduct their work in a quiet, private manner. As a result, money for a department remodel was included in the 2019–2028 City Capital Improvement Plan.
In preparation for the remodel, our Records Division spent countless hours last year digitizing volumes of paper records that had been stored in the department. Converting them to electronic records has reduced the amount of storage space needed, which in turn will provide more space for offices.
Contractors began work last week and after months of listening to the sounds of hammers and drills, EPPD employees will move into their new office space by the end of June.
