EPPD Statement: Suspect Arrested After Domestic Incident

Post Date:April 22, 2019

At 8:45 a.m. Saturday, April 20, Eden Prairie Police responded to a 911 call from the victim of a domestic assault reported to have occurred at a residence in the 16000 block of South Shore Lane. The victim, a 39-year-old female from Eden Prairie, had escaped the residence to call police. She was transported to Fairview Southdale Hospital to be treated for her injuries.

Believing the suspect, a 31-year-old male from Eden Prairie, was still inside the residence, arriving officers established a perimeter and SWAT teams from Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Edina, St. Louis Park and Minnetonka responded to assist. When attempts to make contact with the suspect were unsuccessful, the Bloomington Police Department Bomb Squad deployed robots into the home and determined the suspect had likely fled before police arrived.

It is important to note, this incident did not involve a threat of explosives. However, the Bloomington Bomb Squad is trained extensively in the use of robotics, and they are often called to assist when it safer to send a robot into a situation before officers attempt to enter.

At 8:53 p.m., with assistance from the Plymouth Police Department, the suspect was located and arrested in Plymouth. Troy Richard Benak is in custody at the Hennepin County Jail, held under probable cause in this case for Kidnapping (felony), making Terroristic Threats (felony) and Domestic Assault – Strangulation (felony).

Eden Prairie Police would like to thank residents in the neighborhood surrounding this incident, some of whom were asked to shelter in place for several hours on Saturday – your patience and vigilance were appreciated as we worked to safely bring this call to a close.
