The Minnesota Recreation & Park Association (MRPA) presented Eden Prairie's Parks and Recreation Department with two awards of excellence at the May 21 City Council Meeting. On behalf of MRPA, Aimee Peterson presented Recreation Services Manager Lori Brink and Community Center Manager Valerie Verley with awards of excellence for the 2018 PeopleFest! event and Passport to Fun scholarship program.

  • PeopleFest! A Community Celebration of Culture is a weeklong series of community events, including stories, performances, food, family activities, and demonstrations, to celebrate the unique cultures represented in Eden Prairie. In 2018, the inaugural PeopleFest! was presented in collaboration by the City of Eden Prairie, Eden Prairie Chinese Association, Eden Prairie Community Foundation, Eden Prairie Schools Community Education, Hennepin County Library, Interfaith Circle and others. The 2019 event is scheduled for Aug. 4–14, 2019.
  • Passport to Fun is a fee assistance program available to residents who live or work in Eden Prairie and would like to participate in a program but cannot afford the registration fees. Approved participants receive 50-percent off the regular cost of recreation programs.

Jasmine Ellingson, aquatics supervisor, accepted American Red Cross awards and recognition for Aquatics Center programs and achievements. The American Red Cross is the governing body for the City’s aquatics programming – which boasts the second-highest number of swim lesson participants in the state, second only to the City of St. Paul – and recognized Eden Prairie as a “Gold Level Learn to Swim Provider.” The Community Center was also awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for hosting its first-ever American Red Cross Training Academy. The Community Center was the only facility in the State of Minnesota to offer this academy in 2018, which was the first academy hosted in Minnesota in the last five years.

Ellingson was awarded an official Certificate of Appreciation for becoming an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer, and Caitlin Bailey, Aquatics Center head guard, was also recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation for becoming an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer.
