The Eden Prairie Police Department blog provides an opportunity for the public to learn more about the people who work there — their stories, their lives, their work in Eden Prairie and their thoughts on topics from driving to dogs.
Check-up from the Neck Up
Most people recognize that working in law enforcement can be a physically demanding job. But what people may not realize is the toll police work can take on an officer’s emotional wellbeing. In 2019, 228 police officers nationwide died by suicide. In 2018, that number was 172.
To help keep our employees healthy, during the past few years the EPPD has provided training on nutrition, good sleep habits and injury prevention exercises. In 2020, the department will start a new mental health initiative designed to enhance our employees’ mental wellbeing. As part of this program, every EPPD staff member, sworn and civilian, will meet individually once per year with a mental health professional who specializes in working with first responders.
Our hope is that this new program will make it easier for our staff to talk with a mental health professional and that they will learn mental wellbeing exercises that can help reduce emotional injuries. The EPPD is committed to creating and sustaining a healthy workplace and believes providing a check-up from the neck up will support that commitment.
