City Government Academy FAQ

• How is City Government Academy different from the Police Department’s Citizens Academy?

  Citizens Academy details the functions and services provided specifically by the Eden Prairie Police Department. City Government Academy covers all City departments and services. The two programs complement each other and residents may participate in both.

• May I bring a guest to class?

  Unfortunately, participants cannot bring guests to class due to space limitations. Participants are, however, encouraged to invite guests to the graduation ceremony during the City Council meeting.

• What happens after I graduate from City Government Academy?

  Graduates are encouraged to apply for open positions on City advisory commissions or find other opportunities to become more involved in the community.

• What happens if I miss a class?

  Participants are asked to attend all sessions and graduation. If there is a scheduling conflict, please contact Katie O'Connor at 952-949-8412.

• What should I wear to City Government Academy?

  At the first session, the City provides each participant with a City Government Academy ¼-zip pullover. Please wear the pullover, along with pants and shoes that are comfortable for tours and other interactive activities.

• Where do City Government Academy classes take place?

  Most classes begin and end at the City Center. There are also sessions scheduled at the Maintenance Facility and Community Center. When off-site tours occur, transportation is prearranged for the group.

• Who can participate in City Government Academy?

  Eden Prairie residents over the age of 18 are eligible to participate. Prior to acceptance into the program, applicants are required to undergo a brief criminal history check. Due to limited space, participants are accepted via a lottery system.
